Durham County Commissioners tackled mental health services, gun violence prevention, and development regulations at their March 6 meeting, while also hearing from a resident frustrated by a confusing restitution refund process.
Sharon Hunter testified about struggling to recover restitution money paid in 2021 after charges against her son were dismissed in February. Despite contacting the clerk's office and county manager multiple times and consulting multiple attorneys, Hunter said she could not find the proper refund form or process. Commissioners did not take immediate action but her case highlighted what Hunter described as a bureaucratic runaround with no clear answer from county staff about how to get her money back.
