Durham City Council unanimously approved a $17 million loan for affordable housing redevelopment while postponing a contested decision on privatizing a historic Black neighborhood street.
City Council unanimously approved a $17,049,195 loan to the Durham Housing Authority for the Villages of Hayti redevelopment, creating 252 affordable units at 30 to 60 percent of area median income plus 210 additional units across phases.
Council postponed a vote on permanently closing Hayti Lane after resident Victoria Peterson and Council Members questioned whether the $80 to 90 million privatization request by Hayti Properties LLC lacked concrete development plans and adequate community engagement.
Mayor Leonardo Williams and school and county leaders issued a joint statement pledging Durham will remain a welcoming community for immigrants and lead with compassion in response to increased immigration enforcement in North Carolina.
