Abigail Yohannes, a senior in Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, Duke announced Sunday night. University leaders told undergraduates that foul play was not suspected.
Mary Pat McMahon, Duke's vice provost and vice president for student affairs, and Trinity Dean Gary Bennett shared the news in an email to students. They said Yohannes' family, loved ones, and the students, faculty, and staff who knew her were in their thoughts.
Yohannes was from Lawrenceville, Georgia, and entered Duke with the Class of 2026. She was majoring in sociology, belonged to Alpha Kappa Delta, the sociology honors society, and lived in the Hollows residential quad.
- Emergency vehicles responded to the Hollows on Sunday afternoon before the university announced Yohannes' death that night.
- Duke said Monday it would share more information about opportunities to remember Yohannes in the days ahead.
- The university also pointed students to campus support services, including Counseling and Psychological Services, DukeLine, and DukeReach.
Last week, NCCU students pressed campus leaders to expand mental health access after sophomore Zyarre Prince died.
What's next: Duke said more information about remembrance opportunities would be shared Monday and later this week.
