The South Ellerbe Restoration Project will force a full closure of Duke Street between Trinity and Monmouth avenues beginning in late May and running into fall 2026. The city needs the stretch clear to complete a new stream and wetland project on the site.
Drivers should follow detour signs to Washington Street or Buchanan Boulevard. Digital message boards will mark the diversion points.
The restoration work goes beyond drainage. When finished, the project will add a paved trail, public art, and plantings along the restored stream corridor. Worth it, eventually.
Pedestrians and cyclists are already dealing with a related impact. The South Ellerbe Trail is closed around the active work zone and is expected to stay that way through December 2027. A detour using Markham Avenue and Washington Street is in place for walkers and riders.
The Duke Street closure is one piece of a broader cluster of city projects running simultaneously. Phase 2 of the American Tobacco Waterline Replacement Project is underway in the American Tobacco District with various closures expected through spring 2027. West Club Boulevard between Alabama and Maryland avenues remains under a temporary road closure as work continues along Carolina Avenue. The NC-54 Waterline Replacement Project wraps up in June 2026.
