Durham County closed the Redwood Convenience Site on Electra Road on Wednesday for a renovation project backed by a $3.3M EPA grant. County staff told CBS 17 the site is expected to be offline for about a year.
The county says monthly use at Redwood grew from roughly 1,000 to 2,000 visits to about 4,000 to 6,000 visits. The rebuilt site is planned as a two-story facility with covered drop-off areas, asphalt roads, updated equipment, a bathroom with running water, and a swap shop.
- Redwood is one of four county convenience sites for waste and recycling drop-off. The county says the project is meant to serve growing demand in the southern part of Durham County.
- During the closure, residents are being directed to the Parkwood site at 5928 N.C. 55 and the Northern Durham site at 11894 N. Roxboro Road.
- Both alternate sites are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.
The county first announced the federal grant in 2023 and at the time said construction would start the next year. The project is now entering construction in 2026.
What's next: Residents who used Redwood for yard waste, batteries, and motor oil will need to use the other county sites until the rebuilt facility opens, with county staff estimating that closure will last about a year.
