The smallest shops sometimes leave the biggest gaps. Vaguely Reminiscent, the 600-square-foot boutique that has occupied Ninth Street for 43 years, is closing as founder Carol Anderson retires.
Forty-three years is a long run by any measure. Most Durham businesses that opened in the early 1980s didn't survive the decade.
Anderson hasn't set a final day yet, but the liquidation sale is underway:
- As of April 13, everything is 25% off: clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, socks, hair items, and toys
- Sandals, gifts, and jewelry are still in stock
- Discounts will deepen as time passes
Vaguely Reminiscent's closure is the latest in a string of long-running Durham independents winding down. Bull City Records announced its closure in late March after 20 years; University Club of Durham shuttered after 39.
No announcement has been made about what comes next for the Ninth Street space.
